Part of the area destined to the MPX Itaqui was inhabited by 95 families of the Vila Madureira community who did not have the legal title of the property. The houses were covered by straw and clay walls, without infrastructure and basic sanitation, and 25 of these 95 families lived of the residues collection from a clandestine landfill.
Before the beginning of plant’s construction works, the MPX Itaqui has engaged in indemnifying and reallocating these 25 families from Vila Madureira, together with 70 families who used to live nearby, preserving kinship bonds and neighborhood. Those inhabitants had been transferred to a new location: the Nova Canaã Residential Village, in the city of Paço do Lumiar, at 30 kilometers from the Center of São LuÃs. The new living place was jointly chosen and approved with those families from Vila Madureira, after a group visit to some areas presented by the company.
In a 25 thousand square meters area, in plain land, the residential units for each one of the families from Vila Madureira had been constructed.
Besides houses with public title, equipped with stove, refrigerator, blender, TV and computer, the families had gained churches, sports area, infantile park, school, headquarters for neighborhood association, square and market.
And the program goes further: MPX Itaqui has destined a 60 hectares area of fertile soil for the families, where a Project of Agricultural Development will be implanted, forecasting technical assistance during three years, contemplating soil preparation, raw materials supply and manpower qualification. For the families who did not develop agricultural activity it was destined a six hectares communitarian area of vegetable garden.
